Another shipping route has come under the axe, with carrier coalitions New World Alliance and Grand Alliance announcing they will cut their jointly-run Asia-Black Sea service in the next few weeks.

The EBX (East-Mediterranean/Black Sea Express) route will see its last westbound ship departing from Shanghai on 12 February, a victim of falling shipment volumes, reported Port World.

“This service change is in response to the global economic slowdown that has led to reduced customer demand,” said member carrier OOCL.

Eight ships ran the route, each with an average 5,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity. All eight ships will be suspended.

The members of the two alliances are Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), Hapag-Lloyd, MISC Berhad and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK).
