Russian group Magnit has reported that dollar sales increased by 10.3 per cent during the first month of the year, flying in the face of a weakening rouble and weakening economy.

The budget retailer announced January sales of US$393m, with preliminary rouble sales rising 42 per cent to hit R12.4bn, Reuters reported.

In addition to sales growth, the group further expanded its store portfolio in the country with the launch of 13 new stores during the month.
