Asda fresh produce aisle

UK-based retailer Asda has said that by Easter it will have taken the number of price cuts across it store since the start of the year to 12,500, by introducing a further round of 5,000 cuts this weekend (28 February).

Additionally, the group said that it will phase out buy-one-get-one-free offers, along with deals and promotions that aren't substantiated by a price, in a bid to end 'baffling' offers with 'vague claims'.

'With the country in recession, we need to do all we can to lower the cost of the weekly shop and do the right thing by our customers,' said Darren Blackhurst, chief merchandising officer at Asda. 'That's what our price pledge is all about, good honest value our customers can trust week in, week out.'

And he added: 'My message to suppliers is simple: we will always champion lower prices for our customers and will not stand for any price rises that cannot be justified.'
