The present economic recession is curtailing the maximum prices for Spanish avocados and mangos this season, according to a leading Málaga-based fresh produce exporter.

Despite expectations of improved avocado returns this year as a result of lower production of avocados, Enrique Colilles, managing director of cooperative Trops said the crisis had placed a limit on prices for the fruit.

Mr Colilles told news agency Efe that as a result of the economic downturn, families across Europe were limiting their spending on fresh produce, which meant that supermarket buyers would only pay a certain amount for the company’s avocados and mangos.

Despite the ‘limit’ on returns, Mr Colilles said the cooperative was still confident of having a good year, thanks to continuing strong demand from the UK and France.

The company’s mango exports are expected to perform particularly well as a result of rising demand and Trops’ managing director said the company anticipated that it would quintuple its mango production over the next five years.

Trops, which is comprised of over 550 growers in southern Spain who together farm some 2,700ha, markets an average of 16,000 tonnes of fresh produce every year, including 12,000 tonnes of avocados and 3,000 tonnes of mangos.
