Agritech

The 17th Agritech exhibition took place in Tel Aviv, Israel, on 5-7 May, attracting 231 exhibitors – 175 from Israel and the rest from abroad – and over 30,000 visitors.

Israeli seed company Zeraim Gedera was present to display its high-yielding tomato varieties, as well as its cucumbers, sweet corn and blocky peppers.

On Zeraim Gedera’s new Gocha tomato variety, which is shaped like a tear drop, marketing manager Gerry Kelman commented: “The fruit enjoys exceptional balanced taste, extended shelf-life both on the plant and post-harvest, and a rather unique shape. At the same time, the plant carries a heavy yield of fruit. Reactions have been amazing.”

The dramatic rise in food prices, in addition to global warming and an increasing lack of precipitation in the region, have encouraged many countries to seek out methods to increase agricultural output and reduce water consumption.

Agritech chairman Danny Meiri said of the exhibition: “The emphasis was on the water supply crisis, both for drinking and agriculture, which is becoming a decisive factor in the foodstuffs issue,” explained. “The spotlight is now on efficient usage of resources and produce varieties with a longer shelf-life.”
