Redbridge Eureka lemons

Redbridge Worldfresh has announced that it has secured a deal for the exclusive supply of Eureka SL-branded seedless lemons (to all but the major retailers), with the fruit set to go on sale to the group's customers from mid-June to November.

The company, which is the procurement division of Total Produce UK, will purchase the lemons from Sundays River Citrus Company (SRCC) in South Africa – the largest integrated packer and marketer of fresh citrus in the country.

'Redbridge enjoys a fantastic relationship with SRCC. It's a privilege working with such a respected supplier and great to be able to offer good, consistent quality lemons week in and week out for more than 6 months of the year,' said Redbridge Worldfresh product manager Morgan Barrett. 'Sundays' lemons have always had a great reputation with customers and now we can offer the new seedless variety, it's just got even better.'

Eureka SL lemons are described as the world's first truly seedlesslemons, after being developed by the Agricultural Research CouncilInstitute for Tropical and Subtropical Crops in South Africa.

The fruit benefits from the favourable climate of the Sundays River Valley, where a range of citrus including Navels, Valencias and grapefruit are also grown – indeed, 50 per cent of the country's export lemon crop is planted in the valley.

SRCC exported around 120,000 tonnes of citrus in 2007 to markets including the UK, Ireland, Canada, eastern and western Europe, Russia, the Middle East, China, Japan and South-east Asia.
