Nunhems, the Netherlands-based subsidiary of Bayer CropScience, has opened a new research and development centre in Cartagena, Spain, with the aim of breeding new vegetable varieties.
The 16ha site, in which Nunhems has invested approximately €2m since the start of construction in 2006, will host programmes for melons, lettuce, artichoke and pepper varieties as well as hosting phytopathology research in the crops.
Newly-developed varieties will benefit consumers and growers as well as other supply chain partners, according to the vegetable genetics and services specialist, with all benefiting from enhanced processing characteristics, better transport and storage abilities, strong performances in different climates, health benefits and enhanced flavour.
'Innovation is a key success factor in our business,' said Nunhems CEO Douwe Zijp at the opening ceremony in Cartagena. 'Nunhems anticipates future trends and constantly renews its product portfolio. We do so in close cooperation with communities like Cartagena, where we can count on favourable growing conditions, a sound infrastructure and local expertise.'
