Peru’s banana exports to Europe and the US increased by 27 per cent this season compared with the previous campaign, with the total value of this year’s shipments estimated at €16,736,402 (US$23,560,000).

During the campaign, which ran from January to May, the South American country exported bananas to 12 countries, of which the Netherlands and the US together accounted for 77 per cent of shipments, according to data from Peruvian export association Apex.

The Netherlands, which is Peru’s largest single export destination, received 54 per cent of the nation’s banana shipments, which had a total worth of €9,169,502 (US$12,908,000), while 23 per cent of exports, valued at €3,796,236 (US$5,344,000) were sent to the US.

Other major export destinations for the Peruvian banana sector were Belgium and Japan, followed by Germany, the UK, Italy, Chile and Switzerland.

Adex said that new exports markets in Ireland, Portugal and Canada were also opened to Peru’s banana exports during the first five months of the year.

According to the association, five major companies were responsible for the majority of exports, comprising Corporación Peruana de Desarrollo Bananero, Bio Costa, Biorgánika, Central Piurana de Asociaciones de Pequeños Productores de Banano Orgánico and Inkabana.
