A fire which ripped through the grounds of Cologne Wholesale Market on the evening of 5 July has caused damage worth around a million euros to facilities at the site.
According to German weekly Fruchthandel, managers at the market have declined to comment further on the potential causes of the fire, which took hold in a former fresh fruit and vegetable coldstore which was being used to house cigarettes and alcoholic beverages.
However, it is understood that the police are currently not ruling out either arson or a technical fault.
Firefighters took several hours to bring the flames under control.
A nearby warehouse used to store bananas was reportedly not affected by the blaze, although around 300 tonnes of bananas were transferred to another part of the market as a precaution.
The incident follows a recent major fire at the Rungis Wholesale Market in Paris, France, which caused considerable damage to the centre's fruit and vegetable facilities.
