Tesco has introduced a pilot scheme to trial carbon labelling on a total of 20 products, including organic tomatoes, potatoes and orange juice.

However, the group has come under fire from leading organic body the Soil Association, which argues that the scheme does not take into account carbon dioxide that is stored and released by agricultural soils.

According to the Soil Association, carbon dioxide of this kind can amount to between 100kg and 400kg of the gas per hectare every year.
