Northwest cherries

The latest crop report by Northwest Cherry Growers (to 3 August 2009) has revealed that fruit shipments have continued to soar over last year's volumes, hitting 16.77m 20lb equivalent boxes compared with the 8.7m boxes recorded in the corresponding period of 2008.

Average shipments for the recorded week to 3 August stood at 239,016 boxes, up on 146,991 boxes in 2008 and 140,238 boxes in 2007.

Northwest Cherry Growers reported that, in terms of size, the percentage of the crop standing at 10.5 Row and larger was 67.65 per cent, higher than the five-year average of 55.49 per cent but down on the 72.32 per cent seen at this stage of 2008.

Rainier cherry shipments for the period stood at 1.68m 15lb equivalent boxes, up on last year's 997,328 boxes but down on the 1.72m boxes seen in 2007.
