The latest “ventes au déballage” in France, which took place on 7-8 August, met with success, according to interprofessional organisation Interfel.
These sales, which are taking place in the car parks of supermarkets and hypermarkets across the country, are designed to absorb surplus volumes of certain varieties on the market, with an aim to pushing up prices.
Peaches and nectarines have benefited greatly from such sales. Almost 4,000 tonnes were sold over the weekend, far more than would normally be sold. Prices for peaches and nectarines are currently 25 per cent less than last year’s.
It was recently announced that authorisation had been given for two more weekends of ventes au déballage on 21-22 August and on 28-29 August. These sales will be extended to more seasonal fruit and vegetables, such as grapes, salads and apples.
