Peruvian asparagus exports are expected to increase to 120,000 tonnes this year, despite a slow start to the 2009 campaign after shipments fell by 18 per cent and 12 per cent respectively in January and February.
“Peru will export approximately 120,000 tonnes (or 23,898,058 (5kg) cartons) of fresh asparagus this year, which is an increase of 9.02 per cent over fiscal 2008,” Michael Horney of leading Peruvian exporter Camposol, told Fruitnet.com
Overall sales performance, however, is less clear-cut since marketing conditions are set to remain conservative during the remainder of the year.
“Peru’s fresh asparagus exports have continued to grow during most of 2009, but markets have been cautious, with less promotions and marketing activities taking place,” explained Mr Horney. “In general, suppliers have been diversifying their markets in an effort to stay away from those destinations where the exchange rate is less attractive.
“During the rest of 2009 we expect the asparagus market will continue to develop conservatively and during the last few months of the year in particular the situation will be interesting as Peru enters its peak season.”
Mr Horney says the industry expects retailers will activate their product lines around October and suggests prices will probably fall slightly in order to keep the product attractive for both buyers and end consumers.
