On Wednesday (9 September), Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul, was inundated by flash floods sparked by torrential rains, bringing much of the city to a standstill.

The death toll has reportedly passed two dozen and is still rising. In addition, the floods washed over a main road linking the city to an industrial area, an airport and a highway to Greece.

However, according to Kerim Taner of leading Turkish producer-exporter Alara, the effect on the agricultural sector has been minimal.

“The floods mainly hit the urban Istanbul area, so agriculture has not really been impacted,” he told Fruitnet.com. “As for distribution, there are two roads to the airport – one was blocked, the other was all right. But crops are generally not airfreighted from Turkey anyway. And we have experienced no problems with our shipments by truck either.”
