New Covent Garden Market

London-based wholesale market New Covent Garden has announcedmore details of its ambitious redevelopment plans, which would see the 23hasite re-branded as ‘The Garden’.

The outline plans for the Vauxhall site include a new marketfor fresh produce and food preparation and a new flower market, while proposalsfor a ‘hub’ containing cafes, restaurants and a retail market are also beingconsidered.

The development of the site will see the facility unveiledunder as new identity as ‘The Garden at New Covent Garden Market’, which itsplanners envision as a food centre for London.

In a statement, the Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA)said it was preparing a planning application, to be submitted next year, for amodern new market for the site’s 240 tenant companies, which would provide upto 50,167m2 of trading space for fresh produce and flowers.

In order to finance the plans, the CGMA said it would beidentifying other areas of the market that would be suitable for other forms ofredevelopment.

A community consultation of the proposals will begin inNovember this year, while the CGMA will look to secure a private developmentpartner in early 2010.
