A promotional campaign designed to get people in Italy eating more healthily is due to start today and continue until Sunday 4 October in Verona, Rome and Naples.

The government-backed 'Tre Giorni della Salute' ('Three Days of Health') initiative will seek to inform consumers young and old about the impact a healthy, Mediterranean diet that includes fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables can have on their lives.

The event has also received the backing of agricultural industry organisation Fedagri-Confcooperative.

On Saturday 3 October, the organisation's president Paolo Bruni will discuss the project and its implications alongside Italian Ministry of Health representative Francesca Martini during a special talk-show event in Verona's Piazza Bra.

"I believe strongly in these kind of awareness initiatives," commented Mr Bruni, "because it is important for Italian consumers to be more and more assured about the absolute quality of the fruit and vegetables that end up on our tables."

He added: "Italian fresh produce is safe food that has undergone rigorous testing and its importance to our health is confirmed by many medical and scientific studies."
