Cameo apples

Cameo apples have been voted Tastiest Apple at the UK’sNational Fruit Show for the second year in a row. The variety also won Best Exhibit at the show based onappearance criteria.

The competition, judged by a panel of six expert judges whotasted a total of 101 entries for the Tastiest Apple class, formed part of theannual National Fruit Show trade fair in Kent, which is the premierevent for the English topfruit industry.

The centrepiece of the show, held each October, is thelargest competitive display of commercially grown topfruit staged in theUK.

Cameo, which was discovered by chance in Washington State inthe US, is thought to be a cross between Golden Delicious and Red Deliciousthat occurred through natural pollination.

The variety, which boasts an extended shelf-life, is nowgrown in orchards throughout Kent and other parts of England and is availablefrom November until late spring.
