Mercasalamanca

The president of Spain’s Castile and León region, Juan Vicente Herrera, has officially opened the country’s newest wholesale market, Mercasalamanca, following an investment of €56m.

The new facility has been placed next to major road network and it is hoped that Mercasalamanca will become an important logistics hub for northeast Spain as well as acting as a conduit for imports and exports from Portugal.

In a statement, the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) said that Mercasalamanca would cover some 255,000m2, encompassing a wholesale market with a fruit and vegetables hall, an all-purpose warehouse, an empty container warehouse and an administrative building.

The fruit and vegetables section itself will include 25 wholesale distributors and eight vegetable producers, according to WUWM.

Of the initial €56m investment, some €10m was publicly funded, while €16m was provided from private funds and the remainder from Mercasalamanca. Over the next four years the investment is expected to exceed €108m.
