Agrexco melons 2010

Agrexco is set to begin the export season for its range of Carmel-branded melons, with the offering including its French Charentais, Spanish Magenta and domestic Galia varieties.

According to the Israel-based exporter, the Charentais variety will mainly head to France, where it is popular for its pale orange flesh and enticing scent, with special attention paid to packaging to include a 10kg-12kg pack as well as a small 5kg pack.

Magenta, a variety developed by Nunhems in Spain, boasts a high Brix level of 13 per cent and is grown in the Dead Sea and Northern Arava areas, in high tunnels covering an area of 27ha.

The Israel-developed Galia variety is now into its third export season, Agrexco noted, and will be marketed under the Maayan banner. With a Brix level of 11 per cent and a strong aroma, the fruit will be shipped to continental Europe as well as the neighbouring island of Cyprus, the group said, with exports commencing during the second week of March and running through until May.

'It doesn't matter how you eat them: with a spoon, cut into cubes or balls, cut into halves or quarters,' the group said. 'The melon's taste is simply delicious – sweet and juicy.'
