The recent cold temperatures, heavy rains and frosts that have hit the south-eastern Spanish region of Murcia could actually benefit fruit and vegetable growers rather than damage crops, according to a local association.

Although the inclement weather has affected traffic and daily life in the region, Asaja Murcia said the low temperatures and heavy rains were “very positive” for producers of winter fruits and vegetables.

In a statement, Asaja Murcia’s secretary general, Afonso Gálvez Caravaca, said that recent news concerning the weather had “brought joy to growers and Murcia’s horticultural sector”.

Mr Gálvez said the region’s fruit and vegetable crops were being aided by the rains that have been falling on Murcia since Sunday (14 February), explaining that they are helping growers to regulate the production and harvesting of winter crops.
