Italy Vignola cherries

Reports from Italy suggest cherry production in the region aroundVignola - one of the country's major sources of the fruit – hassustained major damage at the hands of unseasonable rainfall in lateMay.

Estimates put forward by the Italian Cherry Consortium suggest theVignola crop will be around 70-80 per cent down this year as a resultof the adverse conditions.

The heavy rains have compounded earlier losses due to Spring frosts, which had already prompted a reduction in the region's cherry volumeestimate by around 30 per cent.

Traditionally arriving later than cherry production in Puglia,Vignola's harvest is followed by the start of cherry exports fromTrentino in the north-east of Italy, which comes online in late July.
