New CO2 controls in Cargofresh's Controlled Atmosphere (CA) system have been hailed as a success following a test run transporting Cavendish and baby bananas between Costa Rica and the Port of Hamburg.

Following the success of the trial, the system was granted official certification by German shipping classification society Germanischer Lloyd.

The controls, designed to prevent the bananas becoming infested with mould such as crown rot, actively regulate the proportions of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the environment to controlled proportions.

Following arrival at the port, the bananas were found to be in an "impeccable state", a statement said, with CO2 regulation ensuring that even bananas that had not been treated by fungicide were preserved from mould infestation.

"These excellent results, and the certification from Germanischer Lloyd, prove once again the high quality and reliability of Cargofresh CA systems," said the group's Peter Winch.
