California cherries

Cherry growers in the US state of California have emerged from a 17 May storm with the crop relatively unscathed, The Packer reported.

'It looks as if we dodged a bullet,' said Flavor Tree Fruit Company president Maurice Cameron.

The storm dumped 2.5mm of rain in the Fresno area of the San Joaquin Valley while lesser falls were recorded in the state's northern cherry-growing region of Stockton.

'Our fruit is pretty mature and the skins are more pliable, which makes them less susceptible to splitting,' Mr Cameron said, adding that the northern areas received less rain, which helped less mature cherries escape damage.

Mr Cameron said that while softer varieties could have absorbed the rain, thereby lessening the fruit's sugar levels, this would only last a few days before being corrected.
