QV Foods Ltd has announced that it has extended the reach of its potato grower base with the purchase of the potato packing business of Taypack Potatoes Ltd, based in Scotland, UK.

The Taypack business is centred around a purpose-built factory near Dundee and, as of 1 June, is fully operated by QV, ensuring continuity to existing customers and suppliers, the group said.

Taypack grows 800 acres (324ha) of its own potatoes and includes a grower network of 4,000 acres (1,600ha) in the region supplying the grading and packing facility.

'For QV, this is an excellent opportunity to establish a base in an important potato growing area in Scotland,' said director Simon Martin. 'The support of the enlarged team and additional facilities will enable QV Scotland to continue to provide an excellent service to existing customers of both businesses, and we look forward to working with our extended Scottish supply base and new customers to enhance our service delivery and create new opportunities together.'

The deal was described as a 'significant piece' in the British potato supply jigsaw for QV, enhancing services and reinforcing the group's commitment to quality supply, Mr Martin added.

'This really is a win-win deal,' he said. 'We have seen the way our business was transformed after we purchased MBM potatoes last year and buying Taypack Potatoes is the next step forward for us, as we pursue our objective of being the industry leader in British potato supply to all sectors of the market.'
