Using revolutionary SLB (Shelf-Life Booster) technology, Israeli packaging firm Hefestus has developed new ways to facilitate the consumption of so-called superfruits pomegranates.

The company’s proprietary technology separates the peel from the arils, as well as from the paper-thin white membrane surrounding seed clusters, using a unique method based on water and sound waves, the company revealed.

The technology also enables the release of a natural preservative from the skin, Hefestus said, coating each seed and providing “natural anti-rancidity protection”.

“Consumers today seek the health benefits of the pomegranate without the hassle of peeling it,” said Oded Shtemer, CEO and president of Hefestus. “They want the whole package: a ready-to-eat superfruit with maximum freshness and ease of use. With our proprietary technology, consumers don’t have to compromise at all.”

To assist suppliers and retailers in maximising shelf-life, Hefestus packs the fruit with Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) using the SLB method of sealing trays.

“These benefits ensure continuous production and low waste, achieving long-lasting shelf-life at relatively low cost,” commented Mr Shtemer.
