In the UK, retailer ASDA has announced today that it is reducing the prices of its 10 top-selling groceries to just £0.50 (€0.63) this weekend (27 June) in a bid to help customers amid rising food prices.

The products involved in the price drop include fresh produce such as bananas, grapes and potatoes, as well as other core products like bread, butter and eggs.

'We are totally committed to giving our customers the lowest prices in Britain every day of the year,' said Darren Blackhurst, ASDA's food trading director. 'Value for everyone is what ASDA stands for and with the credit crunch starting to bite and household bills on the rise that's never been more important.'

The price cuts will be made across each of the 329 ASDA stores in theUK, a statement said, from Friday 27 June to Sunday 29 June.
