Strawberries

The California strawberry industry is toasting another record-breaking campaign with highest-ever shipments recorded throughout June, The Packer has reported.

As of 26 June, 103.4m trays of California strawberries had been shipped, up from the previous all time high to the same point in the season, 102m trays shipped last year.

In early June, 7.8m trays were shipped during a single week, breaking the previous weekly record of 7.1m, also set in 2009.

According to Carolyn O'Donnell, communications director of the California Strawberry Commission, the development of new varieties in recent years is one reason for the increase in volumes.
