Mango exports from Australia climbed by 25 per cent during the past season, driven largely by soaring interest from New Zealand, according to the Australian Mango Industry Association (AMIA).
Shipments jumped 25 per cent to 4,000 tonnes through the campaign, at a value of around A$15m, with some 80 per cent coming from Queensland Farms, ABC News reported.
AMIA spokesman Trevor Dunmall told ABC that exports had gone to South East Asia, the Middle East, the UK and Europe, but that growth had really been achieved in China and New Zealand – the latter increasing imports of Australian mangoes by 200 per cent year-on-year.
"One of the major retailers in New Zealand started stocking Australian mangoes for the first time last season and that's really lifted the volumes going into New Zealand," Mr Dunmall explained. "New Zealand is certainly becoming a strong market for us."
