Israel-basedpackaging technology specialist Hefestus has announced that it has made a breakthrough in packaging solutions that extend the shelf life of fresh cherries without compromising appearance or taste.

The group said that it conducted multiple controlled field trials using a variety of packaging systems to successfully develop a method that extends cherries' shelf-life by over 20 days.

'We received impressive results for all our packaging machines,' said Oded Shtemer, president and CEO at Hefestus. 'Hefestus' packaging solution for cherries is suitable for any size production or marketing operation, small or large.'

Referring to the machinery used, Mr Shtemer pointed out that 'Athena' was a compact packaging system designed for shelf-life enhancement, while 'Hercules' was the group's most advanced and high-speed packaging machine.

The use of Shelf Life Booster (SLB), the group's proprietary packaging technology, not only helps extend shelf life but also maintains the fruit's firm, crisp texture as well as its freshness, Hefestus said.

'SLB technology allows our customers to reduce the costs of packaging materials and improves our environmental profile by using environmentally friendly packaging,' Mr Shtemer added.
