Waitrose Utopia Amcor cherries

Leading UK importer Utopia UK Limited has launched new season cherries using an innovative new pack called PushPop.

The pack design, which has been developed by packaging specialist Amcor, will be available in branches of the supermarket chain Waitrose.

According to Lawrence Andrew, Utopia's packaging manager, the company chose to use Amcor PushPop because it met all of its criteria. 'It is a pack that stands out from the crowd in terms of product branding,' he said. It is both easy to open and with a wide opening, and reduces our overall pack weight.'

According to the company, today’s consumers want easy-to-open packaging solutions which can be opened without knives, scissors or destroying the packaging entirely. Amcor's PushPop offers consumers the option of just pushing in the special perforation on the top of the pack and popping the pack open in order to the cherries inside.

The pack is also stackable and stands up on the shelf, allowing for 'excellent product differentiation' as the entire surface can be printed, including the top and the bottom of the pack.

The Amcor PushPop is also ideal for a wide range of other products, according to its developers. 'It is perfect for single-use fresh produce or can be used to replace trays and punnets which, importantly, provides a pack weight reduction,' said a spokesman for Amcor. 'Food waste is also reduced through the application of Amcor's modified atmosphere technology, P-Plus.'
