North West cherries

A spokesman for cherry suppliers in north-west US say they are expecting to pack 4m more cartons this season, in addition to the 3.9m cartons (9.1kg) shipped so far.

At the beginning of this week, suppliers said they were hoping to ship a further4m-5m cartons this season, putting this year's total cropestimate at between 7.2m and 8.2m cartons, but that figure is now set to be below 8m cartons.

With trees in the areas around Chelan said to be 'loaded with fruits', the industry has reportedly been packing about 225,000 to 250,000 boxes a day during the past week.

This time last year, total shipments were running at just under 9.1m cartons.
