Aldi and Lidl, Germany's two heavyweight discount operators, have notched up significant new growth in sales in the first half of 2008, according to latest reports.

Citing GfK figures, German fresh produce weekly Fruchthandel Magazine says Aldi has seen sales climb by 7.2 per cent while rival Lidl has enjoyed a 13.2 per cent growth in sales in the first six months of the year.

Other discounters are also performing strongly in Germany, where discounters already dominate the food retail market.

Norma (+12.3 per cent) and Netto (+7.1 per cent) have both scored well, while Rewe's discount subsidiary Penny (+1.8 per cent) and Plus (-2.1 per cent) had a more difficult time.
