M & W Mack has announced its financial results for the year to April 2000. The fresh produce supplier announced pre-tax profits of £6.68 million, up £110,000 on last year. Sales for the period were down at £212m, against £223m in the previous year. This reduction was attributed to various factors, including the loss of a major winter grape supplier, deflation in many product areas and a shorter reporting period. In his review of the year chairman Christopher Mack said: "This year presented us with a number of challenges and it is of enormous credit to the people within the business that our successes more than compensated for the problems we faced. Perhaps the most significant of these challenges were the ongoing rationalisation of the supply base by the major supermarkets and the departure of a number of managers from within our grape business."
