Production of avocados in the western Argentinean area of Tucumán has been on the increase in recent years as citrus growers seek an alternative to lemons. According to Argentinean press reports, the crop presents many advantages to growers in the region as they are able to reduce costs and use their existing infrastructure.

Tucumán has good growing conditions: well drained soils in plantations set on hillsides at high altitudes where there is ample rainfall, especially during the crucial spring period.
