HRH PRINCE of Wales warned retailers against token gestures at the launch of the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD)/Business in the Community's report on local sourcing.

Speaking on Monday to an audience of food manufacturers, retailers and the press, Prince Charles urged food retailers and processors to commit themselves to a long-term policy in favour of local sourcing.

'I would caution against any temptation towards token action,' he said. 'Fine words are not enough.' The guide Local Sourcing – Growing Rural Business is aimed to help small rural producers of food and drink establish mutually beneficial relationships with multiple retailers. It contains case studies of effective partnerships forged between small producers and large buyers.

IGD chief executive Joanne Denney OBE said: 'The UK, like many other nations, has a richness and diversity of food that should find its rightful place in the market both at home and abroad. The case studies illustrate how this can be achieved, we hope they will inspire more companies to seize the initiative.' Over 10,000 copies of the report – sponsored by Sainsbury's, HSBC and the NFU – are being distributed. Contact localsourcing@igd.com l l
