Panama's Puerto Armuelles Fruit Company (Pafco), a subsidiary of Chiquita Brands is reported to be in talks with its employees. According to La Prensa, workers are negotiating the right to farm two of the company's plantations, union leader José Morris Quintero is reported.

Management and workers sat down at the negotiating table this week for the first time following the closure of the two plantations in July when they were deemed by Pafco not to be commercially viable.

Some 250 workers stand to benefit from the purchase of the farms, Morris is reported. They would sell fruit produced by the farms to Pafco on an exclusive basis.

Panama's banana export values in the first three quarters of 2001 were 25 per cent down on the same period of the previous year reflecting a softening world-wide in banana prices amid global oversupply.
