A Northern Ireland fruiterer will be reunited with his family thanks to the US Apple Export Council.

John Hale, owner of Hales Fruit Shop in Newcastle, County Down, scooped a trip to Boston for two for his winning retail display.

In a showdown to celebrate the McIntosh apple's connections with Scotland and Northern Ireland, Hale's merchandising was voted best for eye appeal and consumer accessibility.

John, said to be 'delighted' with his win, and will use the trip for a family reunion with his relatives near the thriving east-coast port, which has a high Irish population.

The contest was open to all customers on Belfast Wholesale Market.

Salesman Eamonn Shiels, of DP Hale & Company Ltd, won a $500 award for supplying the winner.

Ten other retailers and their suppliers went home with a selection of runners-up prizes.
