The first UK cucumbers of the season have made an appearance. Two boxes of the new crop were sent to JB Brown on Manchester wholesale market at the end of last week.

The crop was grown and packed at Anchor Nurseries, Beverley, East Yorkshire, which produces 350,000 boxes a year from almost eight acres. It grows exclusively for English Village Salads (EVS), which supplies the majority of the cues to Asda and Marks & Spencer.

The first variety producing fruit is Armarda from Rijk Zwaan. Anchor Nurseries uses its own propagated plants.

The revenue for the first two boxes will be donated to the charity Christian Partners in Africa. l
