Developed and manufactured in Italy, the Quality Station probe uses near infra red (NIR) technology to measure sugar levels, acidity, pulp consistency and maturity of thin-skinned fruits in less than a second.

The probe is fully portable and is suitable for top fruit, stone fruit and some varieties of melon where the skin is thin enough for the infra red ray to pass through. The system is equipped with a powerful PC so that data can be saved, printed or processed immediately.

'Quality Station has certainly opened a new door in the fruit market by taking the place of traditional lengthy and destructive methods of assessing internal fruit quality,' said Unitec's Rita Biserni. 'It can even be used to test fruit on the tree.' The new instrument is aimed at the whole supply chain from grower to point of sale.

Unitec is an established player in Italian post-harvest technology dating back to 1924.
