Recent frosts in some areas of the country have slowed down crop development, however following one of the warmest starts to April in recent years.

Abbey Parks Asparagus near Boston, Lincs began cutting asparagus grown under glass two weeks ago, outdoor asparagus is expected to begin harvesting next week.

And the Asparagus Growers Association reports cutting in Norfolk and Kent began over the first weekend of April.

Supermarket giant Tesco has already marketed its first six crates of asparagus in two local stores in the Vale of Evesham this week. And the store expects to have supplies nation-wide by the end of the month.

Growers are hopeful that an early start will not be an early finish and are anticipating a 10-week season this year.
