The changes at Nisa have come about as a result of feedback from the group's 700 member-owned stores. All produce is class I and the loose range includes exotics and speciality vegetables such as garlic, ginger, sweet potatoes and asparagus as well as a range of exotic lettuce.

The pre-pack range has been extended and redesigned to feature lines such as plum tomatoes, flat and button mushrooms, and Royal Gala and Bramley apples.

Sizes of outers have also been revamped with smaller cases available to allow better stock management at the full size-range of Nisa stores and to cut down on wastage.

'Customers tend to base their quality perception of a store on its fresh produce displays,' said trading controller Andrew Hirst. 'If a retailer gets fresh produce wrong, a customer will have a bad perception of the store in general.' As a result, Nisa's fresh produce supply division Nisachill is increasing its supply base for fresh produce and setting prices to members on a weekly basis. Improvements have also been made with the introduction of quality assurance checkers to assess produce before delivery to member stores.
