The new tuber, named Elizabeth, has been bred for the salad market by Agrico in partnership with Solanum. The potato is being sold exclusively by Sainsbury's in a select number of stores. It is grown in east Suffolk and volumes this season will be very limited. Elizabeth is harvested in late May and early June as a new potato, but Solanum has really developed the variety as a set-skin salad type following research into consumer trends. Elizabeth has a long, oval shape and pale yellow flesh. It is being marketed in small pillow packs incorporating the Queen's jubilee logo. And visitors to this week's Chelsea Flower Show can get a sneak preview of the potato on Sainsbury's stand.
