The largest area affected by low temperatures in May was Wenatchee in the north of Washington state. Producers' representative organisation Northwest Cherry Growers has confirmed that its overall projections for the crop have been reduced 'but with the increased number of trees, we are still estimating a crop of 8million to 8.5m 20-lb cartons,' said the organisation's Eric Patrick. 'Exports to the UK are expected to continue as initially planned and we hope to see continued growth in the UK market.' Some 268,214 cases were exported in 2000 and this rose to 300,916 cases last season.
