ORCHID postal packer Hortic Express Ltd has won the Goldstar Award at Starpack 2002 for its unique packaging.

The Spalding based horticultural importer and supplier was announced as the winner at a ceremony held at London's Park Lane Hilton Hotel. TV presenter Angela Rippon presented the award.

Hortic Express' managing director Andrew Nicholl-Smith said: 'This award demonstrates that the seemingly impossible can become a reality when one combines the complementary expertise of every member of the development team. The Orchid Box is the first of our bespoke mail order packs and clearly this success is a tremendous platform upon which we are able to further expand this sector of our business.' wing to the delicate nature of orchids, the Orchid Box consists of a unique inner fitting to hold the plant, with an insulating fleece to cushion the flower and an outer box to offer overall protection. The box also leaves enough room for a bottle of champagne, a box of chocolates or another gift. Hortic Express added that the box has saved 23 per cent on its packing speed.

The annual Starpack Awards, organised by the Institute of Packaging, have been running in the UK since the early 1960s.
