A new seed, launched by Pseedco, aims to improve potato crop returns by as much as 30 per cent.

The chronologically managed seed, Pseedco Date-Smart? is designed to maximise the number and size of tubers from each plant to ensure that crops consistently reach high standards.

Under trial for two years with the British Potato Council at Cambridge University Farms the benefit of the seed is 'in the way it influences the number of daughter, ware tubers from each plant and the size of the resultant produce,' said Pseedco agronomist Alistair Redpath.

By increasing yields and ensuring crop quality it is hoped that growers will be able to remain competitive in specialised markets.

Richard Clarke, commercial director of Branston Potatoes said there is 'the potential to improve ware growers' returns by some £300-400 per acre'.

The seed will be available this autumn.
