During the four-day festival Somerfield was joined in its marquee by six suppliers, who between them handed out 10,000 fresh bananas, 6,000 slices of nectarines, plums and peaches and over 10,000 individual baby carrots, babycorn and mangetout.

'This proved a great weekend for everyone involved. Somerfield is committed to increasing the availability of fresh fruit and vegetables for everyone and we wanted to give everyone a taste of what's good for them at this year's Balloon Fiesta,' said David Stokes, Somerfield's trading controller, fresh produce.

Centre stage at the Somerfield marquee was a six-foot high, heart-shaped 5-a-day logo made with more than 1,300 red and yellow carnations by Lingarden.

The supermarket is also teaming up with the Department of Health which will launch its 5-a-day campaign next spring.

The sampling was made possible by the support of Somerfield's suppliers, said Stokes, with bananas from Fyffes, stone fruit from Primafruit, melons and pineapples from Del Monte, strawberries and blueberries from KG Fruits and baby veg from Mack Multiples
