The new website follows the progress of the potato from plough to plate. 'It shows how Waitrose and Solanum work together to ensure that potatoes are in prime condition when they reach customers and gives advice on how to ensure they remain that way at home,' the store said in a statement.

A major feature of the site is a guide to 22 different varieties of potatoes and their uses, so consumers will be able to find out which potatoes are best mashed, which make the tastiest chips and which to use for summer salads.

John Foley, head of buying for fruit, vegetables and horticulture at Waitrose, said: 'Our new website offers fascinating insight into Britain's best loved vegetable. There's something for everyone, from food technology students to those who simply love cooking and eating potatoes.'
