Bramley Apple Campaigners cooked up a record-breaking scheme today with the creation of Britain's biggest ever Bramley apple pie.

To celebrate Bramley Apple Pie Week, the colossal dessert, which took seven people five hours to construct, was assembled at London's Borough Market.

Measuring a massive six sqm, the heavyweight mouth-waterer contained a staggering 300kg of puff pastry that had been specially transported from Scotland by pastrymakers William Sword Ltd.

Cooked from a recipe donated by celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson, the dessert contained not only a staggering 6,500 Bramleys, but also the tongue-tingling flavours of lemon zest, nutmeg and cinnamon.

Students from Stratford Upon Avon Catering College who helped create the pie were on hand to add the finishing touch – a more than generous sprinkling of some 12kg of sugar which they then caramelised with blow torches.

Ian Mitchell, chairman of the Bramley Apple Campaign said: 'Bramley Apple Pie Week is an annual event to raise awareness for Bramley apples and encourage everyone to buy and cook with these unique and 'best of British' apples. We are delighted that we have broken the British record for the biggest apple pie ever.' The Salvation Army later distributed giant slices of the pie to hostels throughout London.
