According to local press reports, cool weather and some incidence of disease before plants were transplanted to fields have delayed plantings of Vidalia onions by around a week on last year. Most of the crop should be in the ground by the end of the week, however and acreage under production is likely to be in line with last season at 14,000 acres. Growers will be keeping their fingers crossed this year that the late spring frosts and disease problems that reduced crops by half last winter, will not strike again.

They also have seven new varieties available for commercial production for the first time this season bringing the total number to 19. Savannah Sweet has now overtaken Vidalia Sweet as the industry standard although up to 30 new types are tested each year.
