The new SOLA for Dimilin 25 WP (diflubenzuron) in lettuce is an important development for growers committed to integrated crop management.

'Used for caterpillar control alongside biologicals it allows an overall reduction in pesticide inputs,' said Peter Hingley, general manager at crop protection specialist Certis. 'Dimilin maintains beneficial natural predator and parasite populations, providing an alternative to pyrethroids, while offering effective and persistent pest control.' The off-label also extends for use on baby-leaf crops including brassicas, and also for outdoor herbs.

In salad onions the SOLA for Aliette 80 WG (fosetyl-aluminium) extends the fungicide armoury against downy mildew, offering another mode of action.

'With no known resistance, the availability of Aliette aids anti-resistance strategies, avoiding over-use of other active ingredients in the programme,' said Hingley.

Early applications are recommended. The systemic activity of Aliette allows new growth to be protected with the downward movement of the active ingredient providing additional control of soil-borne diseases such as pythium and phytophthora.
